Niagara Falls UNITY Project at Hyde Park
Interactive Public Art Highlights Connections Despite Differences
July 12, 2018 – The Niagara Falls Community Development Department welcomes residents to take part in UNITY, a temporary and interactive public art project located next to Sal Maglie Stadium. “Our goal is to create community within Niagara Falls city parks,” said Seth Piccirillo, Director of Community Development. “This project shows that when we actually take time to learn about one another, there is much more that brings us together than divides us.”
UNITY is circular arrangement of 32 poles in a 41-foot circle. Each pole is labeled with an identifier. For example, “I’m a parent,” “I was born in Niagara Falls,” “My family’s continent of origin is _____.” With yarn, participants tie to each pole with which they identify. A canopy of interconnectedness forms as more people participate. In the end, we see that we are all connected by something. This project celebrates the uniqueness of individuals and raises awareness of how labels impact our perception of and interactions with the world.
