On July 10, 2017, Niagara Falls Community Development sent our first official Zombie Fight Project correspondence to Citizens Bank, utilizing New York State’s new Zombie Property and Foreclosure Prevention Law. Citizens Bank owns seven Niagara Falls properties, pending foreclosure, that also have municipal code violations on the property. Per the new law, Citizens Bank now has seven days to address those code violations or to complete the foreclosure process. If that does not happen, the bank will be subject to financial penalty.
We are open to working with the bank to find a solution that leads to the sale of these properties. However, if that does not happen, the City of Niagara Falls is prepared to take legal action, as prescribed by utilizing New York State’s new Zombie Property and Foreclosure Prevention Law. As always, we will continue to keep the community updated throughout this process.
The City of Niagara Falls’ strategic approach to targeting foreclosure properties is made possible by a competitive granted awarded by the Local Initiatives Support Corporation and support from New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman.
